You know you’re interested in extra protection, so you’re considering the Ford extended warranty option for your car. It doesn’t matter if your Ford is new, certified pre-owned, or used; it’s still worth looking into available options for extra coverage.

1. The Cost of a Ford Extended Warranty

Once a Ford factory warranty ends, you have to figure out how to handle repair costs on your own. If you’ve ever looked at the costs of repairs as Fords get older, the price tags can seem astronomical sometimes. A Ford extended warranty cost appears to be more and more worthwhile when you compare the expense.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $1000 to approximately $5000 for an extended warranty. Different factors go into what you’ll pay, like the age of your car, higher mileage, the type of coverage, preferred deductibles, and the model of your Ford.

2. Extended Service Plans Available

Ford offers various extended service plans for their vehicles. You’ll want to compare them to see which one you want to choose from. Each of their plans can be purchased directly from any Ford dealer, and coverage applies for up to eight years or 150,000 miles, whatever comes first.

Their top-tier plan is the PremiumCARE option. It is comprehensive and provides coverage for over a thousand different components, including infotainment and GPS systems. The next tier covers the main electrical components, transmission, and the engine. It does not include coverage for safety systems.

In the second level of coverage, the BaseCARE plan, you can expect an enhanced powertrain warranty. It covers suspension, air conditioning, steerage, and brakes but does not include a few other systems. The bottom tier, the PowertrainCARE warranty, consists of the most expensive components of your Ford, but most other systems are not included.

3. Benefits of a Ford Extended Warranty

When you purchase a Ford extended warranty directly from Ford Motor Company, you automatically get a few benefits as part of the deal. For one, you can rest assured that all parts will be OEM parts so that quality will follow the same standards for all parts replacements and repairs.

Additionally, you will get rental car benefits if your car is in the shop at a dealership for repair. 24/7 roadside assistance is also standard for every Ford extended warranty plan regardless of where you are. If you choose to sell your Ford later while it is still under an extended warranty, the policy will transfer to the new owner without any issues.

4. Exclusions in Ford Extended Warranties

Just like with every other extended warranty, whether manufacturer or third party, there are exclusions that you need to be aware of. You will not have normal wear and tear issues covered. If you need new tires, it’s up to you to get them replaced. When you need an oil change, that’s all on you. Timing belts and other parts that go out naturally over time are going to be your responsibility.

You’ll also have to visit Ford dealerships to get the repairs or replacements done. That can be inconvenient to you, depending on where you live, if there isn’t one nearby. If that’s the case and you don’t have a repair center near you, you may want to consider third-party coverage instead.

5. Third-party Options

You don’t have to buy an extended warranty for your Ford from Ford Motor Company. You can always select to purchase one from a third-party warranty company. There are benefits to going this route, like having more flexibility, lower premiums, and a few additional perks like roadside assistance and trip interruption.

The least expensive options are ones that you buy before the original factory warranty expires. Research your options and look at what is out there to decide what coverage you would like to have for your Ford. Get quotes from multiple third-party companies if you want to go this route so you’ll know you’re getting the best deal.

The Bottom Line

Getting a Ford extended warranty for your car is an excellent option as long as you go into it knowing what to expect. You’ll have to pay a set amount based on your car’s specifications, and you’ll have to choose from one of Ford’s four different plans if you go with a service plan backed by Ford Motor Company. There are significant benefits to going with a Ford-backed policy, like ensuring that all parts will always be top quality and the mechanics will be well-acquainted with the vehicle specs. You’ll still be responsible for certain issues caused by wear and tear, but that applies under any service plan. For more flexibility in coverage options, consider going with a third-party company to make sure all your needs are met.
