Unlike adults, babies need over 12-13 hours of sleep daily to recuperate, grow and develop into their healthiest selves. However, you will seldom find a baby that goes straight to sleep when a parent tries to. It's fairly common, and while getting your baby to sleep can be challenging, there are ways to navigate the issue.

There are certain factors and tricks that you need to implement to be able to make your baby go to sleep in under 40 seconds.

Do they always work? Probably not. But what’s great is that these quick tips can come in clutch for every newborn or toddler parent trying to ensure their baby is well-rested throughout the day and the night.

Understanding Baby Sleep Patterns

Babies have different sleeping patterns compared to adults. They spend more time in a deep sleep state, which is important for their growth and development. However, their sleep cycles are shorter, typically around 50-60 minutes, compared to the 90-minute sleep cycles of adults.

During these individual sleep cycles, the babies move between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

As a parent understanding these individual sleeping patterns is crucial to establish a regular and healthy sleeping routine for the baby.

Factors That Affect Baby’s Sleep:

Several factors can affect a baby's sleep patterns. It's essential to consider these factors when establishing a sleep routine for your baby.

Age – The amount of sleep a baby needs will change as they grow. While newborns tend to sleep for shorter periods, toddlers might have longer sleeping hours.

Hunger – One of the most common factors influencing a baby’s sleeping schedule is hunger. If the baby is hungry, be assured that they will wake up even in the middle of the night.

Discomfort – A wet diaper, illness, teething, or temperature can disrupt a baby's sleep. Understanding what’s exactly contributing to their discomfort is crucial.

Developmental Milestones – Developmental leaps or milestones, such as learning to roll over or crawl, can disrupt a baby's sleep. They may be more active or restless during these periods.

Environment – Where you are putting your baby to sleep influences their sleep quality as well. If you live somewhere with traffic nearby, the constant blaring of the horn might prevent them from sleeping.

Techniques For Putting A Baby To Sleep

Simply understanding the factors influencing your baby’s sleep cycle isn’t enough if you don’t implement proper techniques to put them to sleep.

Following are a few we have sorted for you to look through:

1. Swaddling

The most important and effective way to get your baby to sleep is to swaddle them. This works great for newborns and for toddlers too.

Swaddling involves wrapping a baby snugly in a blanket to mimic the feeling of being in the womb. This provides the baby with a sense of comfort, which later translates into the quality of sleep they get.

Also, when swaddling the baby, ensure the wrap isn’t too tight and uncomfortable. That’s potentially the last thing you want to do. Instead, you have to ensure that the baby is comfortable by wrapped at the same time.

2. Using White Noise Or Lullabies

Another foolproof technique to get your baby to sleep is playing some white noise in the background in their room. If that doesn’t work, soft and melodic lullabies while rocking them to sleep is a great way to get them situated.

Soft, repetitive sounds can create a soothing environment for babies. White noise machines, gentle lullabies, or even a fan or running water can help drown out background noises and provide a calming effect that helps babies fall asleep and stay asleep.

3. Baby Massage

Babies are quite active throughout the day, which puts a strain on their physical body, leading to discomfort in their muscles. This can often prevent them from getting the quality sleep that they need.

Try some baby massage to work around this issue. Gentle massage with soft touches around the baby’s hands, back, and even legs is a great way to get them to relax. It releases the tension from the body and helps your baby relax so they can get a fitful night of sleep. Also, always stick to baby-safe massage oils when massaging since their skin is highly sensitive.

4. Feeding Strategies

If you have a newborn, you likely know that they feed themselves to go to sleep. This is a technique that’s tried and tested for years and centuries, and it works.

Feeding can be a comforting activity for babies and help them fall asleep. Depending on your baby's age, you can adjust your feeding strategy to encourage better sleep. If you have a newborn, you can try to cluster feeding, which involves feeding them more often in the evening. Feeding toddlers and slighter older babies before bed so they are full is a great way to ensure that they get the best quality of sleep throughout the night.

5. Pacifiers

Many parents aren’t the biggest fans of pacifiers, especially when their child turns three or four years old and is just out of their toddler phase. Being dependent on pacifiers indeed comes with many challenges, especially for the baby, who can even develop oral and dental issues later in life.

However, pacifiers are a great way to induce a good night’s sleep for newborns and toddlers. It is often suggested in babies to reduce the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) when the baby is asleep.

6. Rocking And Bouncing

The last and one of the most common tricks to get your baby to sleep is gently rocking or bouncing them in your lap. This rocking motion is soothing for the babies and enables them to sleep quickly.

If you are wondering how to get started, you can always sit down on a rocking chair and rock in it until the baby is asleep. You can swaddle the baby around you and gently rock until the baby falls asleep. Be cautious when transferring a baby to their sleep space to avoid disrupting their sleep.

The 40-Second Baby Sleep Hack

The 40-second baby sleep hack concept became popular when YouTuber Nathan Dailo uploaded a video to their channel titled, “How to put a baby to sleep in less than one minute.”

In that video, their baby, who seems to be quite restless, is ready to sleep. However, Nathan's trick is to take a piece of tissue paper and rub it gently on the baby’s face in slow up-to-down motion.

Doing this for a few seconds is enough because the baby goes straight to sleep, knocked out within a minute.

Other Tips To Promote Healthy Sleeping Habits

Every baby is different, but when it comes to their habits and their routines, they are more or less the same. So, when it comes to promoting healthy sleeping habits in your baby, some tips that you should foster are:

1. Establishing A Consistent Bedtime Routine

Irrespective of your child is age, establishing a bedtime routine is key if you want them to have healthy sleeping habits.

A consistent bedtime routine helps signal your baby that it's time to wind down and prepare for sleep. You can perform bedroom routines with your child, involving them every step of the way. This fosters a sense of habit and allows them to overcome challenges too.

You can read them a book, brush their teeth before bed, sing them a lullaby, etc. Having these as part of the bedtime routine signals your baby that it's time to wind things down and go to sleep.

2. Encouraging Daytime Naps

Good daytime naps are crucial for a baby's overall sleep health. They are good for your baby and keep them fresh and energized throughout the day. Naptime is also great for parents who want to wind down during the day.

Identifying your baby’s sleeping cues is important. Some signals are rubbing their eyes, yawning, fussing, becoming irritable, etc. If you find them collectively throwing fits, it is time to put them down for a nap and help them relax.

3. Monitoring Their Sleep Schedule

It is important to observe your baby's sleep patterns and their individual sleep needs. This involves keeping track of their nap times, the time they wake up, and when they are the most tired during the day.

If you can’t keep everything in your mind, you can always write them down somewhere or maintain a sleeping journal for your baby.

These are a few additional tips we’d recommend you follow when getting your baby down for a restful night of sleep.

Conclusion

Remember, every baby is unique, and it may take time to establish healthy sleep habits. Be patient, stay consistent, and respond to your baby's needs. If you have concerns about your baby's sleep or suspect any sleep-related issues, it's always a good idea to consult your pediatrician for guidance and support.
