Cancer is one of the biggest health threats we face today, even in an age of global pandemics. As a result, it’s important to be aware of some of the potential early warning signs, so you can get treated as soon as possible.

Of course, if you do feel anything out of the ordinary, it is likely to be nothing to worry about – but it’s still important to get it checked out nonetheless, as cancer that is detected early has a far greater chance of being treated successfully. When it comes to your health, it’s always best to be on the safe side.

General Symptoms That Could Indicate The Presence Of Cancer

While some cancers can have specific symptoms, others can produce an array of more general sensations. We will be covering some of the more common symptoms that many people experience, so you know what kinds of things to look out for.

If you do find experience anything concerning, going to the doctor is the first important step. From there, if cancer is suspected, you will be referred for in-depth testing, perhaps including full body scans for cancer detection, followed by the appropriate treatment.

Here are a few key signs to look out for.

Unexplained Weight Loss And Loss Of Appetite

If you have been experiencing a loss of appetite recently, or if you have suddenly lost a significant amount of weight despite having made no changes to your diet, you should speak to a healthcare professional.

Unexplained Pains

Pain is one of the body’s most obvious ways of communicating that something is amiss. Of course, various aches and pains can be common with strenuous physical activity, or as a result of the aging process. However, it’s still worth getting them checked out if you think your pain is unusual or unexplained, or if you have any concerns.

Depending on their findings, your doctor may refer you for further testing, or perhaps even a full body scan. These full body scans for cancer can detect the presence of tumors – and, if established cancer is found, they will show the extent of its spread.

Tiredness

As we all know, fatigue can be caused by your lifestyle. Perhaps you have a newborn in the house, or you have been burning the midnight oil to keep up with your work deadlines. However, frequent tiredness can also indicate a range of health conditions, cancer among them. If there is no obvious reason for you to feel tired all the time, you should make an appointment to see your doctor and discuss it.

Swellings Or Lumps

If you find an unusual lump or swelling anywhere on your body – whether it’s in your groin area, breast tissue, your neck, your chest, or your armpit – you should make an appointment to see your doctor right away.

Bloating

Bloating is a discomfort we all feel from time to time, and can result from these common causes.

However, if you regularly feel bloated, it’s worth getting it checked out just in case, as frequent bloating is unusual and could indicate something is amiss.

Changes In Your Toilet Habits

We all know that spotting blood in our urine or feces is something that needs to be investigated urgently. But other changes should also be checked out, including increased frequency, constipation or diarrhea, experiencing pain during urination, or not being able to go to the toilet despite feeling the urge.

While these symptoms could be caused by a urinary tract infection or a change in diet, it’s still important to have them investigated so you can receive the appropriate treatment or undergo further checks.

Hoarseness In Your Voice

If you haven’t had a cold lately, but your voice has suddenly become hoarse or croaky, you should make an appointment with your doctor. While some common conditions can cause difficulty swallowing, if you experience this sensation for no apparent reason you should have it investigated.

Breathlessness can be caused by a range of conditions, including asthma. However, if you notice you are frequently breathless and can find nothing obvious to explain it, you should speak to your doctor.

Skin Changes

Cancer can also cause changes in the condition of your skin. It may change to be an unusual patch of skin. Any discoloration or odd patches of skin should be examined by a doctor. If they are concerned, they can then refer you to a dermatologist or request a biopsy.

There may be wounds that don’t heal. If your skin is failing to heal properly – even if it’s a tiny problem such as a spot or a small sore – this could be grounds for concern. This includes mouth ulcers and sores as well as skin complaints. If you have a sore spot in your mouth that hasn’t gone away after three weeks, you should consult a healthcare professional. Failure to heal promptly can indicate the presence of underlying conditions such as diabetes, but it could also be an indication of cancer.

A mole may change. While moles are often nothing to worry about – and are often considered a mark of beauty – if one of your moles suddenly changes in appearance, or if a new mole appears, it’s worth having it examined. Look out for any signs of bleeding, oozing, itching, soreness, or a change in color.

What To Do If You’re Worried

If you do experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, or any other unusual sensations that cause you some anxiety, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with your doctor. After all, you know your body better than anyone else, so if something doesn’t feel right don’t dismiss it.

If you do find experience anything concerning, going to the doctor is the first important step. From there, if cancer is suspected, you will be referred for in-depth testing, perhaps including full body scans for cancer detection, followed by the appropriate treatment.

Early detection is vital when it comes to fighting cancer. That’s why it’s important that you don’t delay, particularly if you are experiencing persistent unexplained pain or any of the other potential red flags that could indicate cancer. Hopefully, your trip to the doctor will bring you peace of mind. However, if something troubling is discovered, they can begin treating you right away and provide you with all the care and assistance you need for your condition.
